The Pottstown Juneteenth Story

What began as a moment has grown into a movement.

The Juneteenth celebration in Pottstown was first brought to life by Troy Rivera, who gathered the community at Manatawny Park—creating space for reflection, connection, and recognition of a history that deserved to be honored openly and proudly. Alongside these early efforts, the local NAACP helped carry that spirit forward, ensuring the community had spaces like the Ricketts Center to come together in unity, culture, and purpose.

These early moments were rooted in intention—but they were only the beginning.

In 2023, the celebration stepped into a new chapter. Moving to High Street, Juneteenth became more visible, more vibrant, and more deeply embedded in the heart of Pottstown. That same year, Denise Williams joined the planning efforts, helping to expand the vision and transform the event into something even more impactful.

With growth came purpose—and with purpose came legacy.

In 2023, the Juneteenth Scholarship Program was introduced, ensuring the celebration would not only honor the past, but invest in the future. That first year, 7 students received $250 scholarships, marking the start of a commitment that continues to grow:

  • In 202413 students were awarded $500 scholarships
  • In 20257 students received $900 scholarships

Now, in 2026, we are raising funds to provide 7 students with $1,000 scholarships, continuing our promise to uplift the next generation.

As the celebration evolved, so did the experience.

The introduction of the Black Excellence Gala created a powerful space to honor achievement, legacy, and leadership within our community. It is during this special evening that scholarships are awarded and individuals who have made a lasting impact are recognized as Legacy Leaders.

Our first honoree, Stacey Woodland, was celebrated for her dedication and leadership through her work with the YWCA, setting the tone for honoring those who continue to uplift and strengthen our community every day.

But the story of Juneteenth in Pottstown is not just about events—it’s about impact.

Over the past three years, this initiative has infused approximately $100,000 back into the community, supporting small businesses, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, and strengthening the local economy. More importantly, it has created meaningful impact for youth, families, and the community as a whole.

What was once a gathering has become a tradition.
What was once an idea has become something the community eagerly anticipates each year—with pride, excitement, and unity.

Juneteenth in Pottstown is now more than a celebration—it is a reflection of what’s possible when a community comes together with purpose, passion, and a shared commitment to honoring the past while building a stronger future.

And the story is still being written.
